I’ve always known I was a night owl. Whenever I was working on a project, I was always vastly more effective when I did it from 8pm-4am. There was just the calmness of the night that let me get into the “flow state” and simply get things done. I never understood what was so special about that until I read Paul Graham’s “Maker’s Schedule, Manager’s Schedule”. Reading that showed me why i was always just so much more effective when nobody else was awake. It wasn’t that the night was magical, but simply the value of uninterrupted time with minimal distractions. After that I started treating “deep work” as an actual physical distance and not as a mental model.
